Aeschylus the Athenian, a tragic poet, son of Euphorion, brother of Ameinias, of Euphorion and of Cynaegirus, who, with him, excelled in valour at Marathon. He also had two sons who were tragedians, Euphorion and Euaeon. He competed in the †ninth† Olympiad, when he was twenty-five. He was the first to devise the wearing of masks by the tragic actors skilfully painted with colours and the use of boots called embatae. He wrote elegies and ninety tragedies. He won twenty-eight victories. Some say it was thirteen. Having gone into exile in Sicily because the stage collapsed during one of his productions, he died aged fifty-eight when a tortoise was dropped on his head by an eagle who was carrying it.
