Ἀρχέλαος αἰτηθεὶς παρὰ πότον ποτήριον χρυσοῦν ὑπό τινος τῶν συνήθων οὐ μὴν ἐπιεικῶν ἐκέλευσεν Εὐριπίδηι τὸν παῖδα δοῦναι· θαυμάσαντος δὲ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου, “σὺ μὲν γάρ”, εἶπεν, “αἰτεῖν εἶπεν αἰτεῖν m : ἀιτεῖν εἶπεν m, οὗτος δὲ λαμβάνειν ἄξιός ἐστι καὶ μὴ αἰτῶν.”

τοῦ δ’ Εὐριπίδου τὸν καλὸν Ἀγάθωνα περιλαμβάνοντος ἐν τῶι συμποσίωι καὶ καταφιλοῦντος ἤδη γενειῶντα, πρὸς τοὺς φίλους εἶπε [Ἀρχέλαος sc.] “μή θαυμάσητε· τῶν γὰρ καλῶν καὶ τὸ μετόπωρον καλόν ἐστιν.”
When at a drinking party, one of Archelaus’ acquaintances, who was not an aristocrat, asked him for a gold cup, he ordered a slave to give it to Euripides. The man was astonished but Archelaus said, ‘You are worthy of asking, but this man is worthy of receiving even without asking.’

When Euripides was embracing the beautiful Agathon at a symposium and kissing him although he already had a beard, he (Archelaus) said to his friends. ‘Do not be amazed. For even the autumn of the beautiful is beautiful.’
