His horse-breeding became famous, because of the number of chariots, for no one else, whether a private citizen or a king, had entered seven chariots at Olympia, but only that man, and because by coming first, second, and fourth, as Thucydides says— Euripides says third—he excelled in splendour and fame every quest for glory in these. But Euripides says the following in his ode:
I wonder at you, child of Cleinias. It is a fine thing to win, but the finest, which no one else of the Greeks has accomplished, is to be first, second, and third, and to arrive without effort, crowned with the olive of Zeus, to give the herald your name to shout.
