μάκαρ Σοφοκλέης, ὃς πολὺν χρόνον βιοὺς
ἀπέθανεν εὐδαίμων ἀνὴρ καὶ δεξιός· dexios means ‘skilled’ or ‘clever’; it also refers to the right-hand side (lucky as opposed to ill-omened). Sophocles may have been heroized as Dexion. See T 69 Radt
πολλὰς ποιήσας ποήσας Radt καὶ καλὰς τραγωιδίας
καλῶς ἐτελεύτησ’, οὐδὲν ὑπομείνας κακόν.
Blessed was Sophocles, who, after living a long time, died a happy man and a clever one; having composed many fine tragedies, he had a fine death, having suffered no harm.
