Aristophanes, Frogs 944; Scholium to Frogs 944; Frogs 1407-9; Scholium to Frogs 1408; Frogs 1451-3
i) Aristophanes, Frogs 944 = T 52a Kannicht
(ΕΥΡ.)
(Euripides): Then I reared her (i.e. tragedy), mixing some Cephisophon into my monodies.
ii) Scholium to Aristophanes, Frogs 944 = T 52a Kannicht
It seems that Cephisophon, a slave of Euripides, composed his dramas with him, and especially the lyrics. The comic poets joke that he also slept with his wife.
iii) Aristophanes, Frogs 1407-9 = T 52b Kannicht
ΑΙ.
Aeschylus: And no more word by word for me, but let him, his children, his wife, Cephisophon, get into the scale and sit down, taking along his books…
iv) Scholion to Aristophanes, Frogs 1408 = T 52b Kannicht
And through this he more or less shows both of these things again, that Cephisophon composed his dramas with him and had his wife.
Another version: not only that Cephisophon composed his dramas with him, but also that he was sleeping with his wife.
v) Aristophanes, Frogs 1451-3
Dionysus: | Well said, Palamedes, wisest of natures. By the way, did you invent that or was it Cephisophon? |
Euripides: | It was I alone; Cephisophon composed the vinegary bits. |
