As for me, I know what I suffered at Cleon’s hands because of last year’s comedy. Having dragged me to the Council Chamber, he slandered me and tongued his lies all over me, and unleashed a Cycloboric torrent of abuse, and gave me a dressing, so I was almost totally destroyed through getting mixed up in his filth.
Scholion to Aristophanes’ Acharnians 378
For he made fun of those who preside over elections and elected magistrates, and Cleon as well, in the presence of foreigners…and Cleon, being angry about this, indicted him on a charge of injustice towards the citizens, on the grounds that he had acted outrageously towards the people and the Council. He also indicted him on a charge of being foreign and threw that into the lawsuit.
