ἀκούεις δὲ δήπου τὸν Εὐριπίδην ὡς ἐθορυβήθη ποιησάμενος ἀρχὴν τῆς Μελανίππης ἐκείνην ἐκείνην Sauppe : ἐκείνης M·
Ζεὺς ⟨ὅστις ὁ Ζεύς,⟩ οὐ γὰρ οἶδα πλὴν λόγωι. Fr. 480 Kannicht. ⟨ὅστις ὁ Ζεύς⟩ Duebner (cf. Lucian, Iupp. trag. 41 p. 26, 18 Coenen)
μεταλαβὼν δὲ χορὸν δὲ χορὸν Sauppe : δι’ ἐχθρὸν M ἄλλον (ἐθάρρει ⟨γὰρ⟩ ⟨γὰρ⟩ Duebner ὡς ἔοικε τῶι δράματι γεγραμμένωι πανηγυρικῶς καὶ περιττῶς) ἤλλαξε τὸν στίχον ὡς νῦν γέγραπται·
Ζεύς, ὡς λέλεκται τῆς ἀληθείας ὕπο. Fr. 481 Kannicht
You have heard, I presume, that Euripides provoked outrage when he composed that opening of the Melanippe:
Zeus, whoever Zeus is, for I do not know him except by report.
And having received another chorus (for he had confidence since the drama seemed to have been written in a pompous and elaborate style) he substituted the verse which is now transmitted:
Zeus, as it has been said by truth.
