4The Boeotians who live around Helicon say that according to their tradition Hesiod composed nothing but the Works. And from this poem they subtract the proem to the Muses and say that the poem starts with the verses on the Strifes. And they showed me a lead tablet, by the fountain, for the most part ruined by time, and on it is written the Works.

5 But there is also another opinion, different from the first, that Hesiod wrote a great number of epics, the poem on women, and the one they call the Great Ehoiai, and the Theogony and the poem about the seer Melampus, and how Theseus descended to Hades with Peirithous and the Precepts of Chiron for the instruction of Achilles and everything that followed after the Works and Days.
