Hypothesis (A2) to Aristophanes’ Clouds = T 31 Kassel-Austin
φασὶ τὸν Ἀριστοφάνη γράψαι τὰς Νεφέλας ἀναγκασθέντα ὑπὸ Ἀνύτου καὶ Μελήτου, ἵνα προδιασκέψωνται, ποῖοί τινες εἶεν Ἀθηναῖοι ἀκούοντες κατὰ Σωκράτους. ηὐλαβοῦντο γάρ, ὅτι πολλοὺς εἶχεν ἐραστάς, καὶ μάλιστα τοὺς περὶ Ἀλκιβιάδην, οἳ καὶ ἐπὶ τοῦ δράματος τούτου μηδὲ νικῆσαι ἐποίησαν τὸν ποιητήν.
They say that Aristophanes wrote the Clouds having been compelled to do so by Anytus and Meletus, so that they could spy out in advance which Athenians were listening to Socrates. They were envious because he had many lovers, especially Alcibiades and his circle, who, on the occasion of this play, too, brought it about that the poet did not win.
