This portrait, by an anonymous painter probably from The Netherlands in the 17th Century, depicts Homer. In his right hand is held a sheet of paper with Latin text of the names of cities which have claimed Homer as a native. Of course none of Homer's works were written down for generations, and they were around long before Latin or paper came onto the scene.
